A solid color epoxy floor runs $3 to $7 per square foot installed, the lowest price of any real coating system. The only spec that decides whether you get a floor or a paint job is solids content. A water based kit dries to about 3 mils and a 100% solids pour cures at 10 to 20 mils, and that gap is the whole difference.

What solid color epoxy actually is

A solid color epoxy floor is a two part epoxy, a resin mixed with a hardener, pigmented in one flat color and rolled or squeegeed onto prepared concrete, with no flake or metallic worked in. It is the plainest coating in the catalog, which is why it is the cheapest. What separates a good one from a bad one is solids content: the share of the liquid in the can that stays on the floor after everything else evaporates, measured by volume. A 100% solids epoxy leaves behind almost everything you poured; a 50% solids coating leaves about half, and the rest flashes off into the air.

This is where the box store kit problem starts. The home center kit is technically epoxy, so the label is not lying, but it behaves like paint because it goes on thin and stays thin. Wet film thickness is how thick the coating sits the moment you roll it on; dry film thickness is what is left after the water or solvent flashes off and cures. A thinned water based kit goes on at 5 or 6 wet mils and cures to 2 or 3 dry mils, about a heavy coat of porch paint. A 100% solids pour goes on at 10 to 15 mils and stays there. Same word on the can, very different floor.

Installed, a solid color epoxy floor runs $3 to $7 per square foot, the lowest range of any system on the rate card. It sits at the bottom because it is the least material: one pigmented coat, no flake, no metallic, no quartz layers.

100% solids vs water based epoxy

The choice between 100% solids and water based epoxy is really about how thick a floor you want and where you are legally allowed to buy it. Here is the conversion almost no product page shows you: dry film thickness equals wet film thickness times the solids fraction, so the lower the solids, the thinner the floor.

Benjamin Moore’s Corotech V430, a 100% solids epoxy floor coating (2018 data sheet), specs 10 to 15 mils dry per coat and can be built to 20 mils or more. Westcoat’s Thin Film Water Based system (2025 spec) builds just 5 to 7 dry mils across a primer and a topcoat. One coat of the 100% solids product is thicker than the entire water based system.

The other number that decides the install is pot life: the working window after you mix Part A and Part B, before the batch starts to gel in the bucket and turns unworkable.

The Corotech V430 sheet lists 30 minutes and the AllPro 100% solids epoxy sheet lists 40 to 50 minutes at 77 degrees. Heat shortens all of them, and every 18 degree rise roughly halves the clock. That is the honest tradeoff: 100% solids gives a thick floor in one coat but a short pot life that punishes a slow crew, while water based is forgiving but thin, best as a primer or light duty coat, not a garage floor.

What you are legally allowed to buy depends on your zip code. A VOC, or volatile organic compound, is a solvent that evaporates out of the coating as it cures, which is what air quality rules limit. The EPA national architectural coatings rule (40 CFR Part 59 Subpart D, first issued in 1998) caps VOC content by coating category across the country. Where states go further, the limits get tighter. California’s SCAQMD Rule 1113 is the strictest widely referenced standard, with comparable limits across the northeastern OTC states. That is why a high VOC solvent based epoxy legal in one state cannot be sold in another. The Corotech V430 lists just 13 grams per liter and is compliant in all regulated areas, while a solvent based epoxy can run several hundred.

Where solid color epoxy wins

Solid color is the right pick when the floor is a working surface, not a showpiece, and the concrete under it is sound.

  • Workshops and utility rooms. A clean slab in a low traffic space does not need flake to hide flaws or add grip, and a 100% solids coat is the most floor for the least money here.
  • Commercial and industrial floors. A high build 100% solids epoxy takes vehicular and forklift traffic that a thin coating never will. The AllPro sheet clears forklift traffic after about 7 days of cure, and the Corotech V430 is rated for USDA inspected facilities.
  • As a base coat, or in a safety color. Solid color is what most flake and quartz systems are built on, and it is how you get an exact brand or ANSI safety color onto a floor. If the color is the job, this is the system.

Where solid color epoxy loses

Solid color hides nothing, and that is its real drawback. This is the section the product pages skip.

  • It shows every imperfection. There is no flake to camouflage a patched crack, a grind mark, a roller lap line, or trapped dust. A flat color telegraphs every flaw in the slab and every miss in the application. On a rough or previously coated floor, flake is usually the smarter buy.
  • The thin version fails in a garage. A water based or box store kit that dries to 2 or 3 mils lifts under hot tire pickup, when warm tires soften a thin coating and peel it off the slab as the car cools. A rolled on kit over an unground slab is the floor I most often get called to look at, and it almost always started as the cheapest gallon on the shelf.
  • It shows wear and dirt. A single solid color, especially a darker one, shows tire scuffs, dust, and traffic patterns more than a flake floor does. Easy to clean, hard to keep clean.

Solids content is the one line on the data sheet a salesperson would rather you skip. Read it first, before the color chart and before the price. A cheap gallon that is half water is not a bargain, it is half a floor.

How to buy solid color epoxy without getting burned

Ask for the manufacturer’s technical data sheet for the exact product going on your floor, then read four lines before you sign.

  • Solids content by volume. You want it high: for a garage or a shop, a 100% solids product. A lower solids water based coat is fine for a light duty utility room or a primer, not the wear surface in a garage.
  • Dry film thickness per coat, and the number of coats. This is the actual floor you are buying. Two coats of a 3 mil kit is not the same as one 100% solids pour, and the sheet tells you which.
  • Pot life and crew size. A 30 minute pot life on a big floor needs a fast, experienced crew of at least two; a slow team on a short clock leaves bubbles and lap marks.
  • Adhesion and VOC. A serious sheet reports adhesion tested to ASTM D4541, the pull off test. The AllPro 100% solids sheet lists more than 300 psi, with the concrete failing before the coating lets go, exactly what you want. Check the VOC line too, so the product is legal for your state and space.

Whatever the sheet says, the floor still lives or dies on prep. The slab gets ground or shot blasted, not acid etched, and tested for moisture to ASTM F1869 or F2170 before anything goes down.
