Why Epoxy Floors Turn Yellow, and Which Topcoat Stops It

Here is the part the color chart in the showroom never mentions. Epoxy yellows because its aromatic chemistry breaks down under UV. It starts within weeks near a window or door, and it cannot be reversed, only covered with an aliphatic polyaspartic or polyurethane topcoat. The resin under the color is usually still sound. The color is what fails.
The short answer
Standard epoxy is an aromatic resin, and aromatic resins are not built to sit in sunlight. Ultraviolet light snaps the bonds that hold the color stable, and the surface ambers, then goes gold, then chalks. It is a chemistry problem, not an installation problem, so no crew and no premium brand of aromatic epoxy escapes it. A dark pigment can slow how much you notice it, but nothing stops it if the resin is aromatic.
Once it has turned, you do not get the original color back. Sanding does not help, because the yellowing runs through the resin rather than sitting on top. The only honest repair is to cover it with a coating whose chemistry does not do this, which is what the rest of this page is about. It is also why yellowing sits near the top of the honest downsides of epoxy.
Aromatic versus aliphatic, the whole reason this happens
The word that decides whether your floor yellows is one most homeowners never hear. Aromatic means the resin is built on ring-shaped carbon molecules that absorb UV light and break down under it, releasing the color shift you see as ambering. Aliphatic means the resin is built on straight-chain molecules that shrug UV off and hold their color. Standard epoxy is aromatic. Polyaspartic and quality urethane topcoats are aliphatic. That single difference is the whole story.
You do not have to take a maker’s word for how UV stable a product is. There is a test behind it. ASTM G154, the standard practice for operating fluorescent UV lamp apparatus, is how coatings are run through accelerated sunlight in a chamber so their color hold can be measured instead of guessed. When a manufacturer claims UV stability, that is the kind of exposure the claim should trace back to. Ask for it.
Amine blush versus yellowing, two different problems people mix up
These get confused constantly, and the fix for one is useless on the other. Amine blush is a waxy or greasy haze that forms while epoxy cures, when the amine in the hardener reacts with moisture and carbon dioxide in the air. It shows up as a cloudy or oily film soon after install, and it wipes off. Yellowing is a permanent color change in the cured resin from UV. One is a surface film you can remove. The other is baked into the chemistry and you cannot.

If a floor hazes over in the first week and comes clean with a wet cloth, that is blush, and it is fixable before you ever topcoat. If a patch has gone visibly gold in a sunbeam months in, that is UV, and no cleaning touches it.
Where in a house it actually happens
Yellowing is not even across a floor. It tracks the light. The worst spot in most homes is a south-facing or west-facing garage door, where afternoon sun pours across the slab for hours and the strip of floor inside the door ambers first while the back of the garage stays put. The second spot is anywhere near a window or a glass door, where a bright rectangle of floor shifts color and the shaded floor around it does not, which is what makes it so obvious.
Outdoor floors are the extreme case, which is why I never spec aromatic epoxy outside. A patio or pool deck or a driveway lives in full sun every day, so an aromatic coating there is a countdown, not a maybe. Those spaces get a UV-stable system from the first coat.
The topcoat fix, and what it actually does
You cannot un-yellow epoxy, so the fix is to put a UV-stable coating over it and let that layer take the sunlight from now on. Two chemistries do the job. A polyaspartic is an aliphatic coating that dries hard and holds color in sun. Simiron’s POLYASPARTIC HS data sheet, for one, describes a two-component aliphatic polyaspartic that dries to a hard, non-yellowing finish and lists UV stability as a feature. The other option is an aliphatic polyurethane clear, such as Sikafloor-315 N, which the maker describes as an aliphatic polyurethane with UV blocker technology that protects the resin floor underneath it. Both put an aliphatic shield between the sun and the aromatic epoxy.
The honest con is that a topcoat covers, it does not restore. If the epoxy under it has already gone gold, a clear aliphatic coat locks that gold in and stops it getting worse, but it does not change the color. To actually change the color you grind and rebuild, which is a full job. A clear recoat over a sound floor is a fraction of the cost of a full pour, because you skip the grind and the color build and pay mostly for the topcoat and the labor, but it is not free. For durability, a good aliphatic topcoat also scores well on ASTM D4060 Taber abrasion, the wear test, so it earns its keep beyond just UV. If the floor sees water, that same topcoat is where an anti-slip additive goes, specified to ANSI A326.3, the wet-slip standard. The mechanics are covered in how to recoat an epoxy floor.
If a contractor quotes you standard epoxy for a floor that sits in the sun and does not say the word aliphatic, they are selling you a floor with an expiration date and letting you find out later. The chemistry is not a preference. It is the difference between a floor that holds its color and one that does not.
A full polyaspartic system runs $5 to $12 per square foot as a national range, so if you are choosing from scratch rather than covering an old floor, comparing systems beats paying twice. Frequently asked questions
How to stop epoxy from yellowing? Use an aliphatic coating where sunlight reaches the floor, either a polyaspartic or an aliphatic polyurethane clear, instead of standard aromatic epoxy. If the floor is already down, put a UV-stable topcoat over it. Aromatic epoxy in sun always yellows eventually, so the fix is chemistry, not maintenance.
How to remove yellowing from epoxy floor? You cannot remove it. UV yellowing runs through the cured resin, so sanding or cleaning does not bring the color back. The only real repair is to recoat with an aliphatic topcoat, which stops it getting worse, or to grind the floor down and rebuild it for the original color.
Is epoxy still good if it turns yellow? Usually yes. Yellowing is a color problem, not a structural one, so a floor that has ambered is normally still hard, bonded, and doing its job. It is a cosmetic failure, fixed for looks with a UV-stable topcoat, not because the floor is failing.
Can you reverse yellowing of resin? No. Once an aromatic resin has yellowed under UV, the color change is permanent and cannot be reversed by cleaning, polishing, or bleaching. You can only cover it with an aliphatic coating, or remove the resin and start over.
Does polyaspartic yellow? No, not the way aromatic epoxy does. Polyaspartic is an aliphatic chemistry, which is why it holds color in sunlight and gets used as the UV-stable topcoat over epoxy. It is the fix for yellowing, so sun-exposed floors are specified in polyaspartic from the start.
