How long until you can walk on it?

About 12 to 24 hours for standard epoxy, and as little as 4 to 8 hours for polyaspartic. Walk-on means light foot traffic in clean, soft-soled shoes. The coating is firm to the touch but nowhere near its final hardness, so keep pets, grit, and anything dragged off it until it has had longer.

How long until you can park a car on it?

Wait 3 to 5 days for standard epoxy, or about 24 hours for polyaspartic. This is the milestone people rush and regret. A coating that feels hard underfoot can still be soft enough that warm tires lift it off the slab, which is called hot tire pickup, so parking early is the fastest way to ruin a new floor. Drying versus curing, the difference that matters

Drying is the surface going firm. Curing is the chemistry finishing. Epoxy cures by a crosslinking reaction between the resin and the hardener that keeps going for days after the floor looks done. Until it is fully cured, roughly 7 days, the floor has not reached full hardness or chemical resistance, so hold off on harsh cleaners, spills, and heavy loads. What changes the time

Temperature, humidity, thickness, and the specific product. Cure is a chemical reaction, so it slows in the cold and speeds up in the heat. A garage in January can run past the times above, while a warm day shortens them, and high humidity can interfere with some epoxies during cure. A thicker build or a metallic system takes longer than a thin coat. Cold is the big one, which is why a winter garage install needs either patience or a product rated for low temperatures.

What most people get wrong

The floor feels ready long before it is, and that gap is behind most early failures. The coating goes firm in a day, so people move the fridge back or park the truck, and the still-soft floor takes the damage. Dry enough to touch is not cured enough to use. The floor will tell you it is ready before it is. It feels hard on day two, and it is lying. The car goes on when the data sheet says so, not when it feels solid underfoot.

Can you speed up epoxy cure time? A little, by keeping the space warm and inside the product’s temperature range, because cure runs faster when it is warm. You cannot safely force it past that with fans or heat guns, and trying risks a soft or uneven floor.

Why is my epoxy floor still tacky? Usually a mixing or temperature problem: an off ratio of resin to hardener, or curing in conditions too cold or too humid for the product.
