Does Epoxy Scratch?

Epoxy resists scratching well but is not scratch-proof. What marks it is grit dragged underfoot, not normal walking. The bigger surprise for most people is that the finish decides how much you notice: a high-gloss floor shows every scratch, while a matte or flake finish hides them almost entirely. How scratch-resistant is epoxy?

Hard, and measurably so. Coating hardness and wear are tested by Taber abrasion under ASTM D4060, which spins weighted abrasive wheels on a sample and weighs what comes off, and quality floor epoxies score well. In plain terms, foot traffic, furniture set down gently, and normal life do not scratch a cured epoxy floor. It is built to take a garage and a commercial kitchen.

So what actually scratches it?

Grit, and things dragged across it. The scratches people see come from sand and dirt ground underfoot, a dragged toolbox or appliance, a dropped metal edge, or a dog’s nails over years. None of that is walking; it is abrasion from something harder than the coating moving across it. Keep grit swept up and lift heavy things instead of sliding them and a floor stays clean-looking for years.

Why does my glossy floor show every mark?

Because gloss reflects, and a scratch breaks the reflection. A high-gloss surface works like a mirror, so any fine scratch catches the light and stands out, especially in a sunbeam across a garage floor. A matte finish scatters light, so the same scratch disappears into the texture, and a flake floor hides it best of all because the busy pattern gives the eye nowhere to land. The scratch is the same. What differs is whether you see it.

What most people get wrong

They chase the shiniest floor, then regret it. High gloss looks incredible on install day and shows every scuff by month three, which is why a lot of “epoxy scratches so easily” complaints are really “I picked the finish that shows scratches.” If a low-maintenance look matters more than mirror shine, a satin or flake finish is the honest recommendation. You are not buying more durability, you are buying not noticing.

Can you buff scratches out of an epoxy floor? Light surface scratches in the topcoat can often be polished or hidden with a fresh clear topcoat. Deep gouges that reach the color coat need a spot repair or a recoat.

Is polyaspartic more scratch-resistant than epoxy? Comparable, and both live or die on the topcoat and the finish you choose. UV stability and cure speed are the real differences, covered in the comparison.

Does a flake floor really hide scratches? Yes, better than any smooth finish. The flake pattern and slight texture break up reflections so scratches, dust, and minor flaws all but disappear, which is why it is the default garage floor.
