There are many types of epoxy flooring, and the price per square foot can vary widely depending on the specific product and the complexity of the installation. Here are a few examples of different types of epoxy flooring and rough price ranges:

  1. Standard epoxy floor coating: This is a basic, two-part epoxy coating that is applied to a concrete floor to protect it and give it a glossy finish. Prices for this type of flooring can range from $3 to $12 per square foot, depending on the quality of the product and the condition of the concrete.

  2. Decorative epoxy flooring: This type of epoxy flooring includes chips or other decorative elements that are mixed into the epoxy before it is applied, creating a unique, textured finish. Prices for decorative epoxy flooring can range from $5 to $15 per square foot.

  3. Epoxy floor coatings with UV protection: These epoxy coatings are formulated to resist fading and discoloration when exposed to UV light. Prices for this type of flooring can range from $6 to $15 per square foot.

  4. Epoxy floor coatings with anti-slip properties: These coatings are formulated with an abrasive additive to provide extra traction, making them ideal for use in areas with high foot traffic or where spills are likely. Prices for anti-slip epoxy flooring can range from $8 to $15 per square foot.

  5. Self-leveling epoxy flooring: This type of epoxy flooring is applied in a liquid form that levels itself out to create a smooth, seamless finish. Prices for self-leveling epoxy flooring can range from $8 to $15 per square foot.

  6. Metallic epoxy flooring : is a type of decorative epoxy flooring that includes a metallic pigment mixed into the epoxy resin. This creates a floor with a shimmering, metallic finish that can resemble the appearance of metal, marble, or other natural materials. Prices for metallic epoxy flooring can range from $8 to $20 per square foot, depending on the quality of the product and the complexity of the installation.

What Is Epoxy Flooring?

Epoxy flooring is a floor coating made using a two-part system containing polyepoxides. Polyepoxides are a class of organic compounds with various carbon chains connected to a central structure. The central structure of polyepoxides features a triangle made of one oxygen and two carbon atoms.Ā

The oxygen in the epoxy group is often the reactive site for the compound. When a hardener system reacts with the oxygen, it creates a new bond that forms a larger chain called a polymer.Ā

Most hardeners have multiple reactive sites, allowing the hardener to react with other polyepoxides. When this happens, it perpetuates the chain and gives epoxy floorings their sealing and protective properties.Ā

Epoxy floorings are different than their coating variants in their thickness. Floor coatings typically refer to floorings less than two millimeters thick, while epoxy flooring is thicker.Ā

Epoxy floorings come in various types:Ā

  • Self-leveling epoxy floors: These floorings fill in cracks and other damage to the original flooring and seal against further damage.Ā
  • Epoxy mortar floors: These floorings made from solid epoxies or quartz are best for making a floor chemically and physically resistant to damage.Ā
  • Anti-static epoxy floors: This flooring contains conductive bits of material to gather and safely discharge static for areas that are sensitive to static.Ā
  • Epoxy flake floors: The flakes mixed into this flooring both provide anti-slip properties to the flooring and have a nice appearance to them.Ā

Average Epoxy Flooring Costs

With all the background around epoxy flooring laid out, letā€™s talk about the average costs you can expect when considering epoxy flooring.

Average Epoxy Flooring Cost Per Square Foot

On average, epoxy flooring costs around $5 and $10 per square foot, with labor costs included. You can expect this average cost across all parts of the United States. Although your expenses per square foot are dependent on the materials used, this is also the average price for the different types of epoxy flooring.Ā

While this figure isnā€™t too high, it doesnā€™t give too much detail about the costs you should budget for a unique project. For example, industrial, commercial, and residential prices differ due to these spacesā€™ different requirements.Ā

Average Commercial Epoxy Flooring Costs

Commercial uses for epoxy flooring involve protecting the work area against the harsh chemicals or physical wear the space will take over time. These surfaces can last much longer and keep the workflow moving, thanks to the chemical seal that epoxy flooring creates.Ā

Since commercial spaces tend to be large, most contractors will offer a discount compared to a residential installation. While you could see prices as low as $2.50 per square foot, it applies to vast areas, and the average cost is closer to $8 per square foot.

Average Garage Epoxy Flooring Costs

Most residential uses for epoxy flooring involve protecting garage floors or similar work areas inside the house. Epoxy flooring, especially coatings, makes the work area resistant to spills and physical damage, extending the lifespan of the concrete floor underneath it.Ā

On average, a home garage epoxy flooring costs roughly between $1500 and $3150. Given the size of the average two-car garage, this means an epoxy floor would cost between $3 and $12 per square foot to install and cure at your home.

Benefits of Epoxy Flooring

Epoxy floors have a lot going for them. Many professionals choose epoxy floorings to coat their work surfaces for the following reasons:Ā

  • Epoxy floorings are a sealant against most harsh chemicals and physical exposure, helping extend the floorā€™s lifespan.Ā
  • Epoxy floors have a glossy finish, improving the look and sheen of the workspace.Ā
  • The glossy finish also enhances the areaā€™s available light, helping you see spills, dust, and other hazards while working.Ā
  • Epoxy floors are easy to clean since they do not absorb chemicals, oil, dust, or debris like other flooring systems.Ā
  • They are inexpensive compared to many other flooring systems, such as tiling.Ā

FAQs

Is it cheaper to epoxy the floor than to use other flooring systems? Well, here are the answers to some of the frequent questions out there about epoxy flooring costs and how they stack up against other flooring systems:Ā

Is epoxy flooring cheaper than tile?

On average, epoxy flooring is cheaper than tile. Epoxy flooring can cost between $3 and $12 per square foot, but a tile floor will cost between $14 and $21 per square foot.Ā

Is epoxy flooring cheaper than laminate flooring?

Epoxy flooring and laminate flooring have a similar price range, so you can expect to pay a comparable price for each flooring. However, laminate flooring doesnā€™t offer the same protection as epoxy, especially against moisture and foot traffic.Ā

How long do epoxy floorings last?

With good maintenance, epoxy flooring can last up to 10 years in a residential home before resurfacing, or reapplication is needed. Most maintenance involves cleaning the flooring regularly and reapplying small amounts of the flooring system if large gashes or holes form in the coating.Ā

Summary

Epoxy flooring is a great way to protect floor services in the workplace and at home. Whether you choose to apply epoxy to all of your floor surfaces or only to apply a coating, the epoxy system will seal the floor against both chemical and physical damage for up to a decade.Ā

While epoxy systems arenā€™t super expensive, itā€™s still a cost you will have to factor into your budget. Check out our epoxy flooring calculator to see what epoxy flooring would cost for you.
